WSOC reporter Ron Magnuson will begin splitting time between his calling in journalism and a higher one.
Magnuson and his wife, Andrea, have created Vertical Horizons Church, a Baptist church in Concord where he will serve as pastor.
The Brooklyn-born Magnuson grew up watching his father, Roy Magnuson, preach across the country, and South American-born Andrea had similar experiences watching her late grandfather sermonize from the pulpit.
"I've always loved the news but I believe the Lord is using it as a stepping stone to a higher calling: the ministry," he said. He added he began feeling the calling after a local pastor told him, "it's time you quit spreading the bad news and start sharing the good news."
Magnuson will continue to work at WSOC and preach for the foreseeable future, he said.
Magnuson studied to be a pastor at Bob Jones University but left after finding a love of journalism. After a decade of reporting, Magnuson said he's ready to fulfill his lifelong dream of preaching.
He said he chose Concord because of the influx of new residents flooding the community due to the North Carolina Research Campus. Magnuson said the services will be relaxed and casual, featuring contemporary music.
Vertical Horizons Church will hold a fundraiser and block party August 16 at 10 a.m. at its 930 Lee-Ann Drive N.E. location. The event will feature Magnuson and special speakers Concord Mayor Scott Padgett and WSOC anchorman Vince Coakley and will raise money for 5-year-old Tyisa Witherspoon who was hit by a school bus in northwest Mecklenburg County several months ago. The event will have free food, games and music.
