RALEIGH
For the second election in a row, a Democrat has unseated a long-term Republican incumbent in North Carolina's congressional delegation.
Democrats now hold eight of the state's 13 seats after high school teacher Larry Kissell upset 10-year Republican incumbent Rep. Robin Hayes on Tuesday. The win gives Democrats the 8th District, which spans from Charlotte to Fayetteville.
According to election data, Kissell and Hayes' race was the closest of North Carolina's 13 contested House seats as Kissell won 54 percent of the vote with 90 percent of precincts reporting. All the other incumbents retained their seats.
The Democratic shift started two years ago with Rep. Heath Shuler's victory over longtime Republican incumbent Charles Taylor in western North Carolina.
