Northwest Cabarrus High School basketball player Ira Hines has committed to play collegiately for UNC-Pembroke.
Hines, a 6-6 center, averaged 6.3 points and 6.1 rebounds per game during his junior season for coach Daniel Jenkins and the Trojans.
"Ira is a very athletic and versatile player with good size and great potential," UNCP coach Ben Miller said. "He's a good young man from a great family and a good high school program at Northwest Cabarrus. Coach Jenkins has done an excellent job with his development and we are very excited that he has joined our basketball family."
Jenkins said of Hines: "He makes good decisions with the ball and he is not just a post player, he's the type of player that's going to do the things you need to do to win. He's been interesting to watch because he's very internally motivated and to see him grow into a team leader was really fun to watch."
Northwest Cabarrus went 23-6 last season with a 16-2 record in the North Piedmont Conference. Hines scored in double figures on six occasions, recording a career-high 15 points and 11 rebounds against South Rowan on Dec. 4. He also posted 20 games with two or more blocked shots including a career-high six blocks twice on the season, once against West Iredell on Feb. 1 and once against Lake Norman on Feb. 20.
The son of Tracy Hines, Ira has earned two varsity letters with Northwest. He is a senior this season.
