The Kannapolis Intimidators' new field manager in 2009 will be Ernie Young, the Chicago White Sox have announced.
A first-year manager, Young spent the 2008 season as the hitting coach of the Rookie League Great Falls Voyagers.
Young played for the Oakland A's (1994-1997), Kansas City Royals (1998), Arizona Diamondbacks (1999), Detroit Tigers (2003) and Cleveland Indians (2004).
When Young retired at the end of the 2007 season he was the active minor league leader in home runs (319), RBI (1,136) and runs.
The Kannapolis hitting coach will be Greg Briley, who played for the Seattle Mariners (1988-1992) and the Florida Marlins (1993). This is his first season in the White Sox organization after nine seasons in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization.
The Intimidators welcome back pitching coach Larry Owens, strength and conditioning coach Tim Rodmaker and trainer Kevin Pillifant.
Fireworks are planned following every Friday and Saturday night home game in 2009.
"In celebration of our 15th anniversary in Kannapolis, we have decided to salute the area with 23 fireworks extravaganzas, including July 4 and Team USA on July 2," said general manger Randy Long.
The Intimidators open the 2009 South Atlantic League season Thursday, April 9 at home against Asheville.
