Davidson Community Players' production of "Working" opens November 6, the inaugural production in their new Armour Street Theatre in Davidson.
Directed by Melissa Ohlman-Roberge, DCP's resident director, the ensemble-focused production stars a diverse cast with a number of local favorites and seeks to show off the Player's wonderful new home on Armour Street.
"Working" is a musical celebrating the common man and woman by Stephen Schwartz, the award-winning writer of the Broadway smash-hit "Wicked," and is based on the 1972 book by Studs Terkel. Terkel's book and the musical are composed of several verbatim interviews by everyday, working-class Americans, each speaking of the ups, downs, joys, and frustrations faced each day in the workplace.
Set to music composed by musical legend James Taylor and Schwartz himself, this show celebrates the struggle of working-class Americans. From bricklayers to cleaning women, waitresses to mill workers, this show will resonate with audience members in a unique, personal way.
After 45 years of "theatre-hopping," Executive Director Cindy Rice describes the player's first permanent home as "a dream come true." The addition of a permanent theatre will allow the Players to expand their programming, especially children's programming, and give the organization's active volunteer base a place to gather and produce special projects. The renovation effort was made possible through the hard work, dedication, and support of the entire Davidson and Lake Norman community.
Eleven performances are scheduled in the Armour Street Theatre, located at 307 Armour Street in Davidson. Performance dates are November 6, 7, 8, 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16 at 8:00 p.m. Matinees are scheduled November 9, 15, and 16 at 2:00 p.m. Tickets priced $15-$17 may be purchased by phone at 704-892-7918 and 704-372-1000 or online through www.carolinatix.org
