Mellena Helms pitched a 2-hitter as Central Cabarrus edged Jay M. Robinson 1-0 in MECA Conference softball Tuesday.
Helms struck out five and walked two.
Central (5-3, 5-1) scored in the top of the sixth inning. Helms led off with a single, and Lindsey Brown bunted for a single. There was an error before Kayla Kindley's suicide squeeze plated the run.
Central had five hits, with Helms and Brown getting two each.
Central is at North Mecklenburg on Thursday.
In the junior varsity game, Central won 7-1.
Winning pitcher Ali Hartsell threw a 5-hitter. She struck out three and issued no walks.
Tori Cragan doubled and singled for Central (2-2, 2-1), Jamie Gallagher hit a two-run double and Katy Brown added a two-run triple.
