When it meets with the Rowan County Commissioners today, Kannapolis City Schools will request $140,00 more than it received in local funding last year.
The Kannapolis City Schools Board of Education is submitting a $9.8 million local funding request to the county. Most of the increase is from the 15 mobile units that were added this year and not included in the 2008-09 budget.
The rest is from the state-mandated pay increase, retirement rate adjustments and insurance increases.
Will Crabtree, director of business operations for the school system, presented a list of projected budget cuts to the school board on Wednesday that were based on Gov. Beverly Purdue's budget recommendations.
The school system has not been told how much the state may reduce funding, but Crabtree said cuts could largely affect student accountability and supplemental funding for disadvantaged students.
School systems have been told to anticipate three, five or seven percent cuts in state funding.
Ellen Boyd, community relations director for Kannapolis City Schools, said state funding accounts for about 65 to 70 percent of the system's $40 million budget.
While the board expressed frustration in trying to plan the budget, Superintendent Jo Anne Byerly said the school system will try to avoid eliminating jobs.
"Our employees are important to our school system," Byerly said. "We're going to do everything we can to minimize the effects on employees."
The board will propose the same funding request to Cabarrus commissioners at a later date.
