Scott Fortune has resigned as head coach of the boys basketball team at Central Cabarrus High School.
Brian King has been named to replace Fortune, said Central Athletic Director Raymond Daugherty.
King, who is from New Jersey, is a graduate of Clemson University.
King coached junior varsity basketball at Central for six seasons under Scott Brewer, took a couple of years off from coaching, then helped Fortune last season.
"I realized I wanted to get back into it," said King, 33. "The practice part is the most fun for me. I just missed coming to practice every day."
King was coaching at Central when the Vikings won the NCHSAA 3A state championship, coached by Brewer.
"I really learned a lot," King said. "That's really helped me, his philosophy of up-tempo basketball. I feel like we are going to try to play that way. Pressure defense, trying to score as many points as we can, the way he organized practice and ran the program. It's a good model to have."
King takes over at Central as the Vikings move from 4A to 3A for the 2009-2010 school year and join a league made up of seven Cabarrus County Schools and A.L. Brown.
"I'm excited," he said. "I think we have a lot of potential to be good. We had a rough year last year. With us dropping down to 3A and playing local schools we're familiar with, we have the potential to be pretty good.
"We pretty much return everybody and we've got some talented young players. Last year was a big rebuilding year for us. The experience we gained playing Charlotte teams should really help. We played great competition last year. We're battle-tested."
King teaches U.S. history.
Fortune took over at Central when Brewer (now head coach at Concord) resigned. Fortune coached the Vikings for three seasons.
"I resigned," Fortune said. "It was my decision. I want to spend more time with the kids and with my family. That's what I'm going to do."
Fortune has a 3-year old son and 1-year old daughter.
Fortune said he is going to help coach defensive linemen on the Central football team under new head coach Chris Shinn.
