LANDIS - An acid spill at Harmony Labs in Landis called out HAZMAT crews in Rowan County Tuesday afternoon.
The call came about 4 p.m. when a lab technician reported she had dropped a vial of hydrochloric acid on the floor, said Rowan EMS director Frank Thomason.
The acid vaporized into the air, but was localized in the lab. It did not spread into other parts of the building.
Rowan-Salisbury HAZMAT, as well as Landis, China Grove and Kannapolis fire departments, responded. HAZMAT teams determined what the acid was and diluted it safely with water, Thomason said. The lab is equipped with a storage tank, so no contaminated water went into the sewer system.
The lab technician sought medical attention just to be safe, Thomason said. She was treated at a local physician's office and released. There are no other injuries reported.
Harmony Labs is a contract manufacturer of cosmetics, over-the-counter drugs and pharmaceuticals.
Founded in 1983, the company expanded from its facility on South Main Street in Landis to the old Wal-Mart building on North Cannon Boulevard in Kannapolis
