Cabarrus school buses to race at speedway tonight

Champions will be crowned in each of the six racing divisions and one Cabarrus County school principal will claim bragging rights Tuesday night at Lowe's Motor Speedway during round 10 of the 16th annual Summer Shootout Series.
Presented by Stock Car Steel, Championship Night will be highlighted by a school bus slobberknocker with six local elementary and middle school principals slated to be among those wheeling the behemoth racing machines on the quarter-mile race track.
Scheduled to trade paint in the season-ending school bus race are Janet Smith, of Weddington Hills Elementary; Phil Hull, of Cox Mill Elementary; Chuck Borders, of Pitts School Road Elementary; Greg Liddle, of Carl A. Furr Elementary; Jim Williams, of Harris Road Middle School; and Jim Carroll, of Concord Middle School.
As the season comes to a close, points battles are tight and several championship winners will be decided by tomorrow night's racing.
The closest of the six championship battles is in the Briggs Collision Legends Car Semi-Pro division, where Jeffrey Bolen, of Lexington, S.C., has a slim 12-point advantage over Cornelius native Andrew Carlsen. Bolen has visited Victory Lane three times this year, while consistency has been the key for Carlsen, who has seven top-five finishes.
In another title fight, Ray Beebe, of Fort Mill, S.C., leads Clayton Weatherman, of Wentzville, Mo., by just 15 points in the chase for the Bandolero Bandits championship. The division features drivers ages 8 to 11.
Due to the overwhelming popularity of the Summer Shootout Series this year, Lowe's Motor Speedway has added a bonus round of racing. Summer Shootout Overdrive will be a double purse, non-Shootout points event held Tuesday evening, Aug. 18. In addition to Legends Car and Bandolero action, school bus racing is slated to return for the final time this season.
Tickets are available in advance at the speedway ticket office and at Gates 4 and 5 the night of the event. Parking is free. Admission is $7 for adults. Children 6-12 are admitted for $3 and kids under 6 are free.
Spectator gates open at 5 p.m. with heat racing at 5:25 p.m. Feature action begins at 7:30 p.m.
