Staff for Cabarrus County Schools will examine recommendations for its 2009-10 budget, now that the state has approved its own budget, said Ronnye Boone, public relations director for the school system, on Thursday.

These recommendations will be presented to the Cabarrus County Board of Education at its next work session, Boone said.

Cabarrus County Schools has not yet received its allotments from the state and was unable to report how much it will receive. These allotments are expected soon, she said.

Typically, Cabarrus County Schools receives about 70 percent of its budget from the state. About 25 percent comes from local funds and about 5 percent from federal funds.

Last month, the school board passed a continuing resolution that said the 2009-10 budget would not be adopted until after the fiscal year began on July 1. The school system and others across the state were waiting for the state to approve its budget.

At Monday's school board meeting, Superintendent Barry Shepherd discussed the state's recent budget approval.

"The General Assembly approved our budget, and our finance department and curriculum department are working to make sense of adjustments," Shepherd said. "I am cautiously optimistic we can keep priorities in order and are looking at ways of protecting people."

Kannapolis City Schools is still working on its budget for the year, but has not made any decisions, the school system said on Thursday.

The next work session for Cabarrus County Schools Board of Education will be at 6 p.m. on Aug. 27, at Cox Mill High School.

The next meeting for Kannapolis City Schools Board of Education will be at 5 p.m. on Sept. 14, at the district office.
