Concord Fire and Life Safety officials confirmed that two people have died following an early-morning crash at the intersection of U.S. 29 and Roberta Church Road.
The two victims were traveling in a 1992 Nissan northbound along U.S. 29 around 6 a.m. when the vehicle ran a red light and collided with a second car, according to a statement released by Maj. W.A. Overcash with the Concord Police Department.
The occupant of the second vehicle, identified by police as Donovan Andre Yelton of Concord, was transported to CMC NorthEast to be treated for injuries sustained in the crash.
The initial investigation did not lead investigators to believe that alcohol impairment was a factor in the accident.
The names of the deceased vicitms have not been released pending notification of family, according to Overcash.
Norman Franklin, public information officer with Concord Fire and Life Safety, said the two-vehicle accident occured about 6 a.m. this morning. All three victims were trapped inside the cars as a result of the crash, he said.
No additional information about the victims was being released.
After the accident, a portion of northbound U.S. 29 remained closed to traffic between Concord Farms Road and Roberta Church Road as the investigation continued.
