An American Red Cross disaster response vehicle, nicknamed "Fred," was vandalized in front of the Red Cross building at 2401 Park Road, Charlotte, late Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.
According to Red Cross spokesperson Kate Meier, the rear doors were ripped off, one of which is still missing. Also, the GPS system volunteers use to navigate to and from disasters was stolen.
As the Red Cross is a nonprofit organization that relies solely on community donations, the loss will be costly, Meier said.
"It affects all our offices, because we use this vehicle to respond to emergencies," Meier said. "Basically, now we have one less vehicle to pack up volunteers and supplies and head to emergencies like home fires. It really will hinder our ability to respond."
