CONCORD - Mark Nantz, president of CMC-NorthEast, announced Thursday he is resigning.
Nantz will be going to Greenville, S.C. to lead Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital, effective in January. Carolinas HealthCare System, which CMC-NorthEast merged with in 2007, also has an operating agreement with Bon Secours St. Francis.
This will leave the largest employer in Cabarrus County, with nearly 4,500 employees, without a leader. Nantz was named president of CMC-NorthEast after Larry Hinsdale was promoted to a higher leadership position in CHS.
Nantz sat on the boards of the Cabarrus Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Cabarrus Economic Development Corporation, and would often meet with the CEO of both entities, John Cox.
"I think he did an incredible job transitioning the leadership that Larry Hinsdale exhibited," Cox said, "making the new relationship between CMC-NorthEast and Carolinas HealthCare System work. That could have been a disaster on the local level, but Mark's leadership avoided the disaster.
"We will miss his input in the community," Cox said.
Nantz has been with CHS for 18 years, where he served as vice president for finance. He came to NorthEast in 2000 as chief financial officer. During the merger, Nantz has guided CMC-NorthEast's expansion in the Cabarrus region -- with the proposed healthplex in Kannapolis, a partnership with the N.C. Research Campus and the new patient bed tower.
The hospital will name an interim leader after the holidays. That process should begin in January, with members of the medical staff and the hospital advisory board participating in searching and naming a permanent replacement.
