Several members of the Independent Tribune staff traveled to Cary on Thursday to be recognized for outstanding journalism in 2008.
In total, the Tribune won four awards in the North Carolina Press Association's 2008 News, Editorial & Photojournalism Contest.
Photographer James Nix was awarded third place in the Best Photo Page category for a series of images that showed the struggle of Charles and Glenna Morris, a Kannapolis couple who have struggled to make ends meet since Pillowtex closed in 2003.
The photo page ran as part of a special section entitled "Pillowtex: Five Years Later," which ran in July of 2008. The section won second place for Best Special Section and Best Multimedia Project in the 2008 N.C. Press Awards.
Tribune staff involved in that project include reporter Ben McNeely, former reporters Eric Deines and Josh Lanier, photographer James Nix, designer Mark Stein, multimedia coordinator Jessica Norman and interim editor Jonathan E. Coleman.
Former reporter Josh McCann won first place in the Business Writing category for a series of articles on who should control the Yadkin River as part of an ongoing dispute over Alcoa's attempts to renew its license to generate power on the river for another 50 years despite public outcry over the environmental impact of such a license.
