Fort Bragg today will hold a Robin Sage unconventional warfare exercise in civilian areas in central North Carolina.
Officials expect more than 100 prospective Special Forces soldiers to participate in the exercise through Jan. 22.
The exercise is the final phase of the 241st Special Forces Qualification Course and will spread across 15 counties. The scenario calls for students to infiltrate the imaginary country of Pineland.
The exercise area includes Alamance, Anson, Cabarrus, Chatham, Davidson, Guilford, Hoke, Montgomery, Moore, Randolph, Richmond, Rowan, Scotland, Stanly and Union counties.
The John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School has coordinated with civilian public safety officials throughout the exercise area.
Residents may hear blank gunfire and see occasional flares, neither of which poses any risk to persons or property.
Residents who encounter a problem should contact local law enforcement officials, who will contact exercise control officials.
The 1st Special Warfare Training Group (Airborne) holds the exercise to provide realistic training in unconventional warfare tactics and techniques.
About 200 military personnel will support the exercise and its guerrilla warfare scenario.
For information, call the center and school's public affairs office at 396-8390 or 396-9394.
