The Wilmar ECA Club met for the 2008 Annual Christmas dinner in the fellowship area of McGill Baptist Church.
Club members and guests enjoyed a dinner, prepared by members of the Wilmar ECA Club. Attending were: Carolyn and Chuck Cross, Cathy Cross, Trish Foster, Janet Heintz, Judy and Robert Furr, Judy Graeber, Ron Esser, Joyce and Robert Kluttz, Debbie and Bruce Mullis, Anita Reedy, George Patterson, Wanda and Archie Ritchie, Joyce and Dan Roberts, Theresa Smith and Mirissa Smith.
Each year the club studies how Christmas is celebrated in other countries. This year, Debbie Mullis led the group in a study of Christmas traditions in Austria. A video took the group on a tour of Austria. The advent wreath is a very important part of Austria's Christmas celebration. Table decorations prepared by, Carolyn Cross, Joyce Roberts and Wanda Ritchie, featured an Advent Wreath with all red candles, surrounded by natural greenery and centered with an antiqued copy of Silent Night. Silent Night was first performed in the village church of Oberndorf, in 1818. Heiliger Nickolaus or "St. Nikolaus" rewards good children with sweets, nuts and apples on December 6. It is believed that Christkindl or "The Christ Child" brings gifts to children on Christmas Eve. Anita Reedy assisted with the program by preparing several dishes featuring foods served during Christmas in Austria. They were enjoyed by the group during the dinner hour, as well as various desserts, typical of Austria.
A fun feature each year, at the Christmas dinner, is a blind auction. Judy Graeber served as auctioneer. Members bring items concealed in a bag. The items are auctioned off to the highest bidder. Proceeds from the auction go to the club's treasury for projects during the year.
Club members brought gifts of clothing, gift cards, toys, books and other items to be shared with a family they adopted for Christmas.
The January meeting will be at the home of Judy Furr, incoming president for 2009-2010. New leadership will assume responsibility and plans will be made for the coming year. Reports will be collected and sent to various committees, in preparation for the Annual ECA Achievement Program in February.
