KANNAPOLIS — Cabarrus Meals on Wheels is moving to a new facility today that will allow the nonprofit group to prepare its own food, have a central location and provide accessible parking for its approximately 600 volunteers.

"We've been thinking about this for a couple of years," said Kimberly Strong, executive director for Cabarrus Meals on Wheels. "We are making the change to help more seniors in Cabarrus County and provide a healthier meal for our seniors."

Currently, 350 county homebound seniors and individuals with disabilities receive the prepared meals and beverages from Meals on Wheels.

In the past, a catering company and CMC-NorthEast have prepared the meals for Cabarrus Meals on Wheels. Having a facility where meals can be prepared in one place will allow the group to have the same food for all of its clients and not have to pay for catering.

And since Strong said the caterers were at their limit for the number of meals they could prepare, this change will also allow the group to provide food for more clients. Meals on Wheels also hired three new people for the kitchen staff.

The Meals on Wheels kitchen staff will prepare meals based on the Raleigh office's menu. The meals will now all be low in sodium, low in sugar and low fat.

"(The best part of the move) is being able to be in control of the food and provide services to more people," said Garry Vreugdenhil, president of the board of directors for Cabarrus Meals on Wheels. "A transition is always challenging, but we are excited about it."

Cabarrus Meals on Wheels is moving from its location on Copperfield Boulevard in Concord to 1701 South Main St. in Kannapolis. To reach Cabarrus Meals on Wheels at its new office, call 704-932-3412.
