Playoffs elude Kannapolis Legion

The Kannapolis American Legion baseball team outscored Stanly County 15-12 Monday night to force a three-way tie for seventh place in the Area III Southern Division final regular season standings.

Kannapolis, Mocksville and Wilkes County finished with identical records, but Post 115 wound up the odd team out based on a head-to-head matchup tiebreaker.

Wilkes County earned the seventh seed with a 3--1 record in head-to-head matchup. Mocksville had a 2-2 mark, clinching the eighth and final postseason spot. Kannapolis was 1-3.
Playoff play begins Friday.

Against Stanly, Wes Honeycutt and Daniel Welch homered for Kannapolis (6-10 league).

Kannapolis bounced back from a 7-6 loss to Wilkes County on Sunday night. Bobby Zimmerman homered for Post 115.

On Saturday night, Kannapolis completed a season sweep of South Rowan with an 18-11 victory.
Zimmerman hit a grand slam, Welch a three-run home run and John Tuttle and Jacob Wright homered.
Welch drove in five runs to back Jordan Phillips' clutch relief pitching.

Concord (7-9) completed its regular season with a loss at Stanly County on Saturday, leaving Post 51 in sixth place but assured of a playoff berth.
