KANNAPOLIS — Members of the Kannapolis City Schools Board of Education were relieved to approve a voluntary monthly pay cut for the upcoming fiscal year on Monday night. The school board has discussed taking a 7.5 percent cut of the $500 to $600 they receive each month since the middle of June.

"Finally," board member Todd Adams said. "I would've thought it would've been easier to do."

The pay cut passed unanimously with no discussion. Members had planned to approve the pay cut at last month's meeting but learned they had to receive approval from the Cabarrus County commissioners, who set the compensation, before doing so.

"They've not changed our pay," said Danita Rickard, chair for the school board. "We're just opting to not take all of it."

Instead, the money will go into a general fund to be used within the school system.

Members are still waiting for the state budget to be approved before they designate the funds. School systems in North Carolina have been told to anticipate budget cuts up to 11 percent of their state funds.

At this point, some school board members estimate that the money from the pay cut will go toward classroom supplies or technology.

"It will go toward what is most needed," said member Doris Buchanan.

The school board decided to take a voluntary pay cut, because they felt it was the right thing to do in a tough economy. In April, all North Carolina state employees and teachers were told to take a half percent pay cut.

"If we are cutting in other directions, we need to be willing to cut ourselves," Adams said. "If we can put it back in the school system, that's even better."

Last month, the Cabarrus County Board of Education passed a 7.5 percent cut to their monthly pay of between $600 and $800 for the next fiscal year.
