Lane develops health care leaders

Sandi Lane is the first winner of the Anita A. Brown Award for leadership at the Cabarrus College of Health Sciences.

Sandi Lane is the program chair for the health services leadership and management department at the Cabarrus College of Health Sciences.
At 48 years old, Lane, who has been at Cabarrus College since 2004, is also the first recipient of the Anita A. Brown Leadership in Education Award.
"I was shocked and honored," Lane said. "I just come to work, and do what I love to do. I have never worked a day in my life."
The award is named in honor of Chancellor emerita Anita Brown.
The award will be presented annually to a faculty member at Cabarrus College who demonstrates the characteristics of outstanding leadership in education.
The characteristics the college looks for in this award include promoting education in a positive way, demonstrating integrity, honesty and accountability, displaying a personal commitment to students and colleagues, and projecting energy and enthusiasm while assisting in the development of leadership skills in an effort to make a difference to the in the college.
"Sandi was a wonderful choice for our first award," Meg Patchett, Ph.D., Provost of the College said. "She was nominated and chosen by her peers to recognize the tremendous leadership she has provided as an instructor, as a program chair, and as the guiding force behind the development of our college's Quality Enhancement Plan. In developing this plan that focuses on service learning as a means for increasing cultural awareness and understanding, Sandi has inspired faculty, staff and students to get involved."
Lane and her husband, Eugene, came to North Carolina in 1993 from New Haven, Conn.
They have three grown children.
Eugene, 50, served 22 years in the Marines, and retired a Master Sgt. at Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville.
Lane and her family came to the area in 2000, where Lane worked in longterm care, as an administrator for three different nursing home chains. Lane has also taught adjunct since 1996.
Her position at the Cabarrus College of Health Sciences involves teaching students to supervise and manage small units, shifts and physician offices. Lane teaches organizational management, leadership and ethical management to all the disciplines that are taught at the college.
"Sandi sets a high bar for her students and they appreciate this," Patchett said.
"When students graduate from her program, they have learned to think critically and present themselves well orally and in writing as future leaders in the healthcare industry."
"I am one of the many that help. I'm a cog in the machine that keeps things going," said Lane.
Lane is currently completing requirements for a Ph.D at the UNC Charlotte in health services research.
She is a fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives, a board member and president-elect of the Greater Charlotte Healthcare Executive Group, a member of the Leadership Cabarrus Steering Committee and vice president for Phi Beta Delta International Honor Society Mu chapter at UNCC.
Brown recently presented Lane the award, which is hung in the college lobby. Lane also received a clock, and plaque with her name on it for her office.
"Being respected by my peers is a great honor," Lane said. "I couldn't have asked for more."
