UPDATE: As of 3:45 p.m., citizens were still not being allowed inside the containment area as crews continue cleanup efforts. Cabarrus County community relations coordinator Chantel Thompson said officials hope to have the area cleaned up and open to residents in the next couple of hours.
Once the cleanup is complete, a wrecker will be brought in to haul away the truck, which overturned during the accident leading to the chemical spill. The exact cause of the accident remains under investigation.
The North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources will determine the environmental impact and appropriate measures moving forward once the initial cleanup is complete.
BREAKING (12:26 p.m.): Cabarrus County emergency personnel have been working all morning to contain a hazardous material spill on Garmon Mill Road near U.S. Highway 601 in Midland.
Approximately 1,500 gallons of ethanol spilled onto the roadway at 7:30 a.m. when a commercial transport vehicle overturned. The ethanol leak is now contained. However, the state regional response team including the Hazmat team with Concord Fire Department continues work to clean up the spill.
As a precaution, homes within a half-mile radius of the spill have been evacuated. The American Red Cross has set up a shelter and reception center at the Midland Volunteer Fire Department on U.S. Highway 601.
Ethanol is a flammable liquid that can cause skin and eye irritation and can be fatal if swallowed.
