Cabarrus County commissioners approved a request from a Charlotte developer to build 19 single-family homes in an unincorporated area of Cabarrus County despite concerns about crowding at local schools.
The Huntley Group of Charlotte asked the county for permission to build the homes on about 54 acres located north of the intersection of Lower Rocky River Road and Morrison Road.
The subdivision would be called Alexander Estates and is expected to add 11 students to the area schools.
The developer is expected to pay $8,617 per home to offset the cost of adding students to school rosters.
Commissioner Grace Mynatt asked how many of the students would be added to the local middle schools. The answer is three, which would affect enrollment at C.C. Griffin Middle School.
"I find it unreasonable to charge for all of those houses for three students," Mynatt said.
Alexander Estates is also expected to add six students at Bethel Elementary School and two students at Hickory Ridge High School.
A new elementary school is scheduled for to start construction on Miami Church Road in 2009 to replace the existing A.T. Allen Elementary School. The school district will transfer 95 students from Bethel to the new school.
Another new elementary school is planned next to C.C. Griffin Middle School on Griffin's Gate Drive S.W. in Concord will take 100 students from Bethel, according to the school system.
A third new elementary school is scheduled to open in 2013 south of Harrisburg.
When it opens, 200 students will transfer from Bethel to the new school.
Commissioners voted 4-1 in favor of allowing the project. Commissioner Coy Privette cast the one dissenting vote.
"I must vote against this proposal before us because of the continuing overcapacity put upon our schools," Privette said.
