KANNAPOLIS — Classes may be out for the summer, but Kannapolis City Schools will stay connected with the community through a new outlet. The school system joined Facebook two months ago and has already connected with almost 300 people who are "fans" of the page.
"A lot more people are using Facebook, and a lot of organizations are using Facebook," said Ellen Boyd, community relations director for the school system. "It's a great way to reach out to people and have a discussion."
Boyd launched and updates the page, which has contact information, photos of events and people within the schools, news posts and allows Facebook members who are "fans" of the page to comment on these items.
"I've been pleased that people are looking at the Facebook page and connecting with other fans who have signed up," said Superintendent Jo Anne Byerly. "I've been pleased to read the comments."
Cindy Martens, a mother of two Kannapolis students, became a "fan" of the page and has enjoyed connecting with teachers, learning about the latest news and seeing photos. She even gave her approval by clicking the "like" button after reading positive comments on the page about teachers in the school system.
"It keeps us informed as parents," Martens said. "This way, I can go in whenever I want to access it, and you can give feedback. You are more a part of it."
While Martens also receives news about the school system through e-mails, she said she initially found out about two new principals for A. L. Brown High School and Forest Park Elementary School last week by logging into Facebook.
The school system's page has reached current and former employees, parents, former students and other members of the community, but it has one restriction. Only Facebook members who are 18 years or older may become "fans" of and have access to the page.
"We try to make sure the content is appropriate," Boyd said.
Martens said she had no opinion on allowing the page to be accessed by students under the age of 18 because it would be good for students to see what is going on, but having the age restriction allows the page to be more geared toward adults.
Her only suggestion for the page is that it could have a calendar so those who view the page would have another reminder for school system events.
Boyd said she is looking at ways to expand the page but did not elaborate.
To become a fan of the page, join Facebook at www.facebook.com and search for Kannapolis City Schools.
