West Rowan High School teacher Stephen Suther doesn't need notes or books to get through a U.S. history lesson.
The third-generation teacher and 39-year veteran of North Carolina classrooms keeps details about the country's leaders and landmarks in his head and close to his heart.
Suther, a Troutman resident, has six teaching awards, including four for teacher of the year. Now he adds another: National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution 2009 Outstanding Teacher of American History.
"The best thing is his passion for history," said senior Jon Crucitti, 17. "He loves everything about this country and its history.
"When you're taking notes, sometimes it's hard to follow for a second," Crucitti said. "He gets so excited. He's talking fast. He's got a big grin on his face."
The state DAR chapter named Suther as its outstanding American history teacher for grades 6 to 12 in April, making him eligible for the national award. Judges chose Suther from among 34 candidates.
Suther hasn't had time to celebrate. He was busy wrapping up the school year and helping students get ready for exams. He'll celebrate at a gathering with family and friends after he accepts the DAR's award in Washington on July 11.
"I'm aware of what the DAR has done for so many years to advance the cause of remembrance in history," said Suther, 62. "I'm especially grateful to get an award like this from them."
Suther's interest in American history started in fourth grade and continued as his parents took him to Gettysburg, Williamsburg and Charleston. By the time he reached high school, his 11th-grade teacher deferred to him on Civil War history.
Since age 22, the Lenoir-Rhyne College grad has been trying to show his students that learning history can be fun. His lectures include personal photographs of historical sites, impersonations and one-man re-enactments of battles. Think he's just being colorful with the details? Check it out.
"If he tells you something and you don't believe him, you can go and check sources," Crucitti said. "It's right."
