Concord chooses stimulus projects

Federal stimulus money earmarked for improving energy efficiency nationwide will be used locally to improve streetlights, traffic lights and energy efficiency at the Logan day care and recreation centers, according to Concord city officials.

Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Energy announced that it would spend $3.2 billion nationwide to improve energy efficiency and fund conservation projects. The Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant program and President Barack Obama's American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will fund the grants.

The plan set aside $58 million for North Carolina. Concord received a grant of $638,800 and Kannapolis received $170,300. Proposals for spending that money were due to the U.S. Department of Energy this week.

Concord decided to spend its portion to retrofit the Logan Day Care and the Logan Rec Center with energy efficiency improvements, weather-stripping the doors at city hall and on other old city-owned buildings, and replacing windows and doors at the Kerr Street Artists' building, said city spokeswoman Deborah Clark.

The city also plans to install LED, or light-emitting diodes, in the Cabarrus Avenue Parking Deck, the canopy shelters at local parks and park walkways.

LEDs typical lifetimes are 25,000 to 100,000 hours, but the lifespan can be shortened with use in heat. LEDs tend to fade, but not burnout like regular bulbs.

Kannapolis City Council decided earlier this month to spend its $170,300 on 10 bicycles for police officers, two Ford Escape hybrids for police and fire departments, and for energy-efficient tennis court lights at Bakers Creek Park.
