Concord boys get set for regional final

Scott Brewer hopes to see two things this weekend: better play from his Concord Spiders basketball team, and lots of CHS fans.
Concord (29-1) faces Forestview (24-6) at 2 p.m. Saturday in the 3A regional final at the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center.
The winner advances to the state championship game at Raleigh's Reynolds Coliseum on Saturday, March 14.
"They're very well-coached," Brewer said of Forestview. "They play hard. They're a zone team. We expect to see a 2-3 zone most of the game. It's a good zone. Very active. They've got a 6-8 kid inside. They've got a little bit of size."
Forestview's top two players are guard Preston Holmes (15 ppg) and 6-3 Dejuan Means (13 ppg), the team's leading rebounder.
"They've got three or four other solid players," Brewer said.
Concord has seen plenty of zone defense this season as teams tried to counter the Spiders' quickness and defensive pressure.
By now, it's well-known that five Concord players average double-figure scoring in up-tempo style.
With a third regional final appearance in four years, the Spiders' success is well-established.
How good are the Spiders this season?
Brewer said his team was subpar against Catholic on Wednesday. The result? Concord still won by 14 points.
"We're going to do our thing and hopefully shoot it better than we did the other night," he said.
The Concord coach noted that both teams have had a pair of quality wins in the playoffs. For the Spiders, it was beating Reagan at home and Lake Norman on the road.
For Forestview, wins against Hickory and Andrews were impressive.
"They played a good schedule," Brewer said. "They beat two really good teams to get to this game, High Point Andrews and Hickory. Hickory was a team we figured would be in the regional."
Forestview won that game 62-51.
"They're peaking at the right time," Brewer said. "We just hope we can fill that arena up with some Concord fans. We just need all the Concord faithful to show up on Saturday."
