Toastmasters Area 34 - Lake Norman, Salisbury, Concord and University City - is conducting its International and Table Topics Contest Thursday, April 2 at Galway Hooker Irish Pub in Cornelius. Dinner is at 6:15 p.m., cost is $15 per person and the contest is at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m.
Since 1924, Toastmasters International - a 501-C3 non-profit organization that runs like a corporation to grow communicators and leaders - has been helping people improve their communication and leadership skills. North Carolina Toastmasters holds statewide contests twice a year. In the spring, the International Speech Contest finds winners to compete internationally for the World Title as Best Speaker.
"People learn best when they are having fun," said Dr. Smedley, the founder of Toastmasters.
Motivational speaking is an art form and the annual contest allows the best to shine. The contest will provide laughter and education as attendees will enjoy motivating and humorous speeches from fellow members from six different clubs in the area.
Contestants from local Toastmasters clubs will be represented by members from Cornelius, Concord, Salisbury, Kannapolis, University City and Mooresville. The winners will advance to the division level with the goal of competing at the statewide conference in April, which will be held in Charlotte.
"North Carolina is seeing healthy club growth, especially the Lake Norman area," said Anette Powell, Area 34 governor. "People know that polishing up their communication skills can help land that next job or promotion, especially in this economic environment we find ourselves in today. Our state is ranked No. 1 in North America and No. 9 in the world having achieved the most accomplishments by its members. People are wise to be part of Toastmasters in this state."
Admission is $15, which includes a scrumptious dinner to complement the event.
The public is welcome. Reservations need to be placed by March 30. Space is limited.
