Eight area elementary schools competed in the Cabarrus County Fire and Life Safety Bowl on Thursday night at Memorial Baptist Church in Kannapolis.
Fourth- and fifth-graders from Bethel, Beverly Hills, Charles E. Boger, Jackson Park, R. Brown McAllister, Shady Brook, W.R. Odell and Woodrow Wilson competed.
Using the bracket system, teams battled it out in the first round. W.R. Odell and Jackson Park advanced to the semi-final round, along with Bethel and Beverly Hills.
W.R. Odell defeated Bethel for the third-place slot. And Beverly Hills edged out Jackson Park, 14-13, to be crowned Cabarrus County Fire and Life Safety Bowl champions.
Teams that placed first, second or third will advance to the state tournament on May 4 in Statesville. The winner of that bowl will receive $1,000 for their school and a trophy explained David Watson who is with the Conover Fire Department and sits on the state committee.
"The goal is to have a team from each county in the state compete," Watson said. Cabarrus, Catawba, Iredell and Mecklenburg are the only counties competing now.
