Stanly County's January unemployment rate increased 2.6 percentage points to 12.1 percent, according to statistics released by the North Carolina Employment Security Commission (NCESC).
Not only was Stanly County above the state's unadjusted unemployment rate of 10.3 percent, but it was one of 72 counties that had a rate of 10 percent or higher.
While all counties saw an increase in unemployment for January, only 36 were above the state's average.
"The Employment Security Commission is continuing to help customers who come to us in this difficult time seeking jobs and unemployment benefits," said ESC Chairman Moses Carey Jr.
Rates increased in all 14 of the state's metropolitan statistical areas, with, locally, the Charlotte-Gastonia-Concord area increasing by 1.6 percent to reach 10.5 percent.
Albemarle, which is categorized in the micropolitan statistical area, reflected the same rates as the rest of the county with 12.1 percent.
Total county employment (not-seasonally adjusted) decreased in January by 84,141 workers from 4.137 million to 4.053 million. Not-seasonally adjusted unemployment increased by 83,420 workers. The unemployment total in January was 464,012 workers, compared with 380,592 in December.
Orange County had the state's lowest unemployment rate at 5.8 percent while Dare County had the highest rate at 17.3 percent.
"The ESC is paying record amounts of benefits to transitional workers and will distribute over $200 million in benefits from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009," Carey said.
In January, there were 158.659 Unemployment Insurance (UI) Initial Claims filed in the state.
New claims totaled 87,229 for the month, which was an increase of 1,205 from December. Forty-eight percent of these were attached new claims.
During the same period a year ago, new claims totaled 55,931, of which 53 percent were attached.
For the month ending January 2007, new claims totaled 47,727 and 51 percent of these were attached.
The five counties receiving the highest amount in unemployment insurance benefits in January were Mecklenburg, $17.7 million; Wake, $12.9 million; Guilford, $9.7 million; Gaston, $6.1 million; and Forsyth, $5.5 million.
In January, $201.5 million in benefits was paid to 234,114 individuals statewide, compared with $194.2 million to 189,458 individuals in December.
