MOUNT PLEASANT — Matt Barrier hit a walk-off home run Tuesday to send Mount Pleasant to the state semifinals.
Barrier ended a pitcher's duel with a two-out blast to left field in the eighth inning for a 1-0 win over West Lincoln in the fourth round of the NCHSAA 2A playoffs.
The Tigers advance to play a best-of-3 series which will determine a spot in the state final. The series is set to start Thursday.
Garrett Furr was the winning pitcher, throwing 3 1/3 innings of relief. Mount Pleasant starter Cory Huneycutt gave the Tigers the strong start they needed.
"I told him give me three innings," Mount Pleasant High head coach Bryan Tyson said. "Garrett probably could have started, he only threw 74 pitches last Friday. I left it up to him."
Furr has pitched in all four of the Tigers' playoff victories.
Each time had six hits. The only 1-2-3 inning was when Mount Pleasant went down in order in the first.
Barrier's blow ended the night.
"When he stays back and braces his leg he has got unbelievable power," Tyson said. "He stayed back on that one, his front leg braced up and the rest is history for the Tigers."
Mount Pleasant fans had been hoping for two wins Tuesday night, but the Tigers' softball team fell 3-1 to Central Davidson in the third round of the playoffs.
