Patchwork Quilt

In the back of my closet
Is a quilt Old Granny Webster made.
When I am sick,
Or cold,
Or lonely ~
It's this blanket I want wrapped around me.
Worn and threadbare in places,
It's the warmest cover ever made.
When I gather it up to my face,
I smell surprise spring rain showers,
Summer cut grass and honeysuckle,
Candy apple hayrides from fall county fairs,
Winter pine from a Christmas tree skirt.
This Hole-in-the-Barn-Door quilt
Has seen lifetimes.
I realize our love is like this:
A collection of patterns;
A kaleidoscope of moods;
Tenderly sewn together;
Fastened and knotted in such a way
That if one stitch loosens,
The entire piece will not unravel.
This patchwork holds our pasts
Like a dream-catcher.
Unfurled, spreads our future in a promise.

I draw you around me like a comforter
And know, at last, I am home.
