The Junior Charity League of Concord is hosting its first Holiday House event on Saturday to raise money for its clothing room for local children in need.

The event will be from 1 to 8 p.m. at the home of Mary Hinson, a sustaining member of the Charity League and owner of The Village Blossom, a local floral company.

Staff members for The Village Blossom will decorate the Hinson home "from top to bottom."

"This is a great way to get in the holiday spirit," said Amy Kluttz, president and spokeswoman for the Charity League. "It's an exquisitely decorated home, open to the public to see what the new trends are and get inspiration for your own home."

There will also be light refreshments available.

The added bonus is that anyone who attends will be supporting a local charity, Kluttz said.

Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door.

The mission of the League is to clothe children in Cabarrus and Rowan counties through its Mariam Coltrane Schramm Clothing Room.

Cabarrus County and Kannapolis City school systems refer students in need to the nonprofit so they can "shop" for new clothes, such as a pair of jeans, a long-sleeved shirt, a T-shirt, a sweatshirt and a warm winter coat, among other items in the clothing room.

Since Sept. 15 this year, the League has provided clothes for more than 750 children. The League hopes to clothe a total of 1,500 students before the clothing room closes in January.

"We are increasing the number of kids we are clothing by about 100, but we will never turn a child away," Deb Snyder, a League volunteer and the chair for the Holiday House event, said.

Kluttz said the need is greater this year because of economic struggles local families are facing.

"We're seeing more children this year than we've ever seen," Kluttz said.

She also said the League, like other charities, has noticed a drop in donations.

There is no goal for Saturday's event, except to have as many people as possible attend.

"We're hoping we can get a good turnout and buy more coats and clothes for kids," Snyder said.

The Hinson home is located at 893 Craigmont Lane, in the Kings Crossing neighborhood in Concord.

Tickets are also available at The Village Blossom, located at 5407 Village Drive, Concord.
