CONCORD — More than a year ago, Habitat Cabarrus approached the Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners with the idea to build an environmentally-friendly community unlike any other Habitat community in the state.
On Monday, commissioners voted to donate approximately 39 acres of county-owned property near Warren C. Coleman Boulevard and Cabarrus Avenue to Habitat for development.
"They're still analyzing the property and making sure it meets their needs and that they'll be able to develop it," said Jonathan Marshall, the county's commerce director. "It's a rough piece of property, but (Habitat's) house plans have evolved and their ability to develop it have evolved."
Where some see rugged terrain, Bill Smith sees potential. Smith, the construction and land development manager for Habitat Cabarrus, said he's walked the property and looks forward to developing the site into a mixture of townhomes and single-family homes that meet some of the highest "green" standards of any Habitat communities in the state.
"To my knowledge, we're the first from-scratch green community from Habitat in the state," he said. "We're EnergyStar certified now. We also have the plans certified by the Advanced Energy Group. This is a step above that."
Plans call for the development of 45 single family lots and 24 townhomes in the neighborhood. Smith said construction could start as early as next July.
