CONCORD - Much is expected of the Concord High School boys basketball team this season.

That's what happens when you go 29-2 and fall only a win short of the state championship game.

On Tuesday night, Concord opened the 2009-10 season with an 88-51 win over East Rowan and showed glimpses of what could be coming.

"I thought our effort was really good," said CHS coach Scott Brewer. "I didn't think we were really good. It was a struggle."

No wonder. The Spiders have been battling injuries and they just got junior guard Jacquise Moore on the team following the end of Concord's football season.

"We've had one practice with 10 players," Brewer said. "We've been banged up."

Sophomore guard Kendall Knorr is supposed to return from a foot injury in another week, and senior wing Griffin Templeton and junior guard Will Vanderburg suffered ankle injuries in a scrimmage, Brewer said.

Nine players scored for Concord against the Mustangs. Senior post Jalen Cannady led the way with 16 points, followed by Templeton with 14 and Moore with 12.

"It was a nonconference, early game, pretty sloppy with a lot of turnovers," Brewer said, "but I really thought we had a lot of energy and I thought we pulled for each other really well."

East led 21-20 after one quarter, but the Spiders outscored the Mustangs 26-11 in the second quarter to take control.

"We've got to play better defense," Brewer said. "But our defense wasn't bad for a first game. My expectations are for them to play as hard as they can play and play together."

The Spiders are at Mount Tabor on Saturday in a boys-only doubleheader, with the junior varsity
playing at 1 p.m. and the varsity at 2:30.

"Our schedule is much better," Brewer said. "I don't know if we'll be 29-2. Our next opponents (including playing Mount Tabor twice) were 148-5 (last season)."

The Spiders will also play Lake Norman (next Wednesday at Rimer Gymnasium) followed by Mount Tabor again, then Hopewell and Salisbury.

"We can be really good if we can get on the same page," Brewer said. "This team's got the potential to be as good (as last year's)."

The Spiders lost only two players from last year's team to graduation, Chance Rucker and Roger Smith.
