CONCORD - Anyone who doesn't think the Concord High School girls basketball team is looking for big things from Nyshia Hammonds should have seen the season opener.
Hammonds, a senior guard who has signed with the Charlotte 49ers, scored 15 of the Spiders' first 23 points Tuesday night in a 75-60 nonconference win over East Rowan.
Hammonds ended with 30 points, making four 3-pointers.
"I expect exactly what you saw tonight," said CHS coach Angela Morton. "Tremendous leadership, great focus, solid defense. When we're in trouble she's got the ball in her hands, going to do something magical with it.
"She worked a lot over the summer on her catch-and-shoot shot because everybody plays her to drive. I was really pleased to see her catch and shoot and not hesitate. She's showing us the complete game she's trying to develop. She's our go-to player."
Junior guard Mariah Black scored 14 points and junior guard Jhemelia Edwards added 12.
The Mustangs led 15-11 after the first quarter, but the Spiders scored 36 points in the second quarter for a 47-37 halftime lead.
"Obviously there's things to work on," Morton said. "Once we settled down in the third quarter, we played a little better. It was the home opener and they were excited. We did not play our style of basketball in the first half. I think maybe they were a little too hyped."
The Spiders are playing without 6-2 junior center Jatzmin Johnson, who tore her ACL in March. She is expected back in December, Morton said.
"She's coming along great," Morton said.
Concord won the state title two years ago and has five players back from that team. Last season, the Spiders made it to the regional semifinal.
Obviously the possibility of going back to the state final is a real one for Concord.
"In our marquee sports, you always think state championship here," Morton said. "We're not afraid of those expectations. Obviously our goal at Concord is to win a state championship. But we know it's a journey with a lot of things between here and March."
A big goal for the Spiders is to win the conference championship for the third straight season.
"It would be extra-special this year in the new conference against county opponents," Morton said.
"We want to take each goal one at a time. We have an unbelievable nonconference schedule coming up. We play East Meck on Saturday night (at Northern Guilford, 6:30). We have Lake Norman (at home) on Wednesday. It's a long path. But we're excited about the opportunity."
