MOUNT PLEASANT — Matt Barrier's cousin is a survivor of it. Tyler Kellis's friend at church is currently battling it. Hunter Carroll's grandmother died from it about a year ago.

Because many of them have known somebody affected by the disease, Mount Pleasant High School's student athletes will be participating tonight in the second annual "King of the Court," a volleyball tournament to benefit breast cancer research.

"Playing for a cause makes it that more enjoyable," said Barrier, a senior and the quarterback for the football team. "A lot of people care about breast cancer. It brings a lot of people together."

More than 60 males who are members of the Athletes Who Share Unselfish Moments Club at the school will wear shirts that are or have pink as they participate in a volleyball game of the juniors versus the seniors.

Last year, former student Amanda Miller and current senior Taylar Thomas started "King of the Court."

Thomas said the idea came about after her volleyball coach, Michelle Barrett, introduced the idea of the team wearing pink jerseys during their games to raise awareness for breast cancer.

Miller and Thomas decided to take it a step further and get the males involved through the AWSUM Club.

At the premiere tournament last year, the club raised about $2,000, just that night. After other fundraisers for breast cancer research, the AWSUM Club raised more than $6,000.

This year, the club will continue to sell handmade pink ribbons, T-shirts with the names of people students know who have been diagnosed with breast cancer and food at Friday night's football game to raise money for the cause.

And there will be the tournament.

Thomas and other volleyball team members have been teaching the participants about the basics of volleyball, since there is no men's team.

"The guys are really excited about showing off for the crowd," Thomas said.

With the tournament and other fundraisers, the AWSUM Club hopes to raise either the same amount as last year or more and to have even more community members come out to watch.

"It means a lot to me knowing everybody cares about this cause," said Dewey Andrews, a senior and linebacker for the football team. "The best part is seeing everybody from the community coming out and supporting us."

The tournament begins at 6 p.m. at the high school.

The club is asking for a $3 donation at the door. Concessions will also be available.
