What life and professional experiences do you feel will help you, if elected?
Dealing with people for more than 36 years in school work plus having been on Kannapolis City Council since 1989 has prepared me extremely well for the position I seek. I have been a part of decisions which have shaped this city for more than 20 years. I listen to people and try to help with their concerns.
What are the three biggest issues facing your constituency and your community?
First, getting our citizens back to work. We need jobs. I believe economic recovery begins with the expansion of small businesses. We need to encourage them and other business expansion,
Second is citizen safety. This continues to be a high priority with me. I will provide he resources necessary for our police and fire departments to protect our citizens.
Third, maintain our present tax rate. Council has reduced it from 53 cents to 49. Many of our citizens are out of work and suffering. Council must continue to be frugal with the dollars we have to spend.
Getting jobs is the most important. Our people must have work to live and prosper.
What specifically would you do to spur economic development and bring jobs, if elected?
I will continue to do those things I have been doing such as encouraging our small business owners, providing incentives to persons bringing jobs to Kannapolis, meeting with prospects, working with the Economic Development Commission and Chamber of Commerce and seeking financing for business expansion In the present economic environment to get projects started again.
What is your vision for the community that would shape your decisions, if elected?
My vision is to bring jobs to Kannapolis so that all of our labor force can be employed and paid a good wage. Several years ago a study was done and 58 percent of our labor force had to leave town daily to work elsewhere. With the research campus being built, the RCCC building being constructed, our young people and other citizens should be able to go there to prepare for the future. I believe education is the key to their future for success. I want to support them in this effort.
Do you have any hobbies?
I enjoy playing golf.
What is the last book you have read?
The Holy Bible.
