MOUNT PLEASANT — This was close. Really close.
But when the points were totaled, the Concord boys had won the South Piedmont 3A Conference cross country championship, held at Mount Pleasant High School on Monday.
This year, that also makes Concord the best among county public schools, along with the Hickory Ridge girls team, Larry Scaggs of A.L. Brown and Teal McLean of Hickory Ridge.
The final tally for the top four teams in the boys competition was: Concord, 64 points; Jay M. Robinson, 67; Hickory Ridge, 68; and A.L. Brown, 72.
"It's been tight all year," said Concord coach Bob Allensworth. "The whole year has been up for grabs.
Anytime you have all these teams together, it's anyone's game.
"Everyone stepped up, from our number one to our number 17. Everyone ran the race that we needed them to run today."
The girls' meet was not close. Hickory Ridge, led by McLean, won with 41 points. Northwest was runner-up with 63.
A.L. Brown placed third with 71 points, and Cox Mill was fourth with 74.
"They've been pushing themselves all year," Hickory Ridge coach Chris Balga said. "They've won almost every race they've been in. I never take anything for granted, but they've worked themselves all year. This is a great moment for them.
"We've had some hard injures, some sicknesses, but everything came out at the end."
Scaggs, a senior, was dominant in the boys race, winning in 16:48.
Scaggs said his run was "all right, I was a little tired from a false start. Some guy tripped and fell, so I was a little tired from that. After I got past the hills, it was all easy.
"My overall goal still stands to beat our school record. It's been there for 27 years. It was set by Reggie Littlejohn. He set 15:27. My best this year is probably a 16:02."
McLean, also a senior, won in 19:48. She noted that she finished 10th at the state finals a year ago.
"My goal this year is to finish top three at state," McLean said.
Said Balga: "She's what everyone wants in a top runner, just great talent, pushing herself to the limit every day, wanting to do more, she's just a great athlete. A woman of few words, but she never will be happy with taking less than first."
Top 14 individual finishers earned all-SPC honors:
The top 14 girls were: McLean; Meaghan McCauley, Robinson; Sierra Hagl, Northwest; Taryn Stern, Hickory Ridge; Gesa Amulung, Mount Pleasant; Katie Coffelt, Cox Mill; Alyssa Lashway, Robinson; Stephanie Isidori, Northwest; Alexandra Hairfield, Robinson; Andrea O'Connell, Robinson; Mercury Arteaga, Northwest; Hannah Bonarrigo, A.L. Brown; Haley Stewart, A.L. Brown; and Kristine Nesslinger, Cox Mill.
Top 14 boys runners were: Scaggs; Braden Zahora, Hickory Ridge; Lucas Baity, Cox Mill; Fred Irving, Concord; Christopher Ramsey, Robinson; Casey Buddenbaum, Hickory Ridge; Sean Daley, Concord; Austin Rohrer, Concord; Michael Dilks, Mount Pleasant; William Witt, Robinson; Earl Coble, Hickory Ridge; Eric Kinzer, Robinson; Zach Fesperman, A.L. This is the first year of a realignment where all of the public schools located in Cabarrus County are in the same league.
