CHARLOTTE - Three more cases of motorists hitting deer were reported on roads in the Charlotte metro region before sunrise Wednesday, bringing the two-day total to at least six.
Wildlife officials have urged Carolinas motorists in recent weeks to be careful, because deer are particularly active at this time of year. The number of deer-versus-vehicle collisions in recent years has climbed considerably.
State transportation officials say about 90 percent of the 15,500 animal-related crashes each year in North Carolina involve deer. Since 2006, those crashes have resulted in 18 human deaths and more than 3,200 injuries.
The highest number of vehicle-deer collisions are in Wake County, and most of the largest totals are in the eastern half of the state. But Mecklenburg County has the highest number of deer collisions in the western part of the state, reporting 472 such crashes last year -- sixth-highest in North Carolina.
Union County is next-highest in deer-vehicle collisions among counties in the western half of the state.
