Kannapolis City Council will have a public hearing on Monday on a proposed $99,925 grant to help pay for improvements to Kannapolis Parkway on the south side of Kannapolis Gateway Business Park.
The total project cost is $199,850 and involves construction of a deceleration lane and an entrance from the Kannapolis Parkway to the Gateway Center would improve traffic flow in that area.
Half of the project would be paid for with private funds while the city is proposing to pay for the other half because the improvements will serve the public interest by expanding economic development, promoting the city economy, increasing the tax base and enhancing city investments, according to city officials.
The proposed access from the Kannapolis Parkway to the business park also will benefit the Gateway Center, which is near the proposed entrance, city officials said.
Approximately 16,816 vehicles travel past the Kannapolis Gateway Business Park via Kannapolis Parkway daily.
Traffic currently must enter the business park via Ketchie Boulevard and travel around Roger Dale Carter Drive and up Gateway Center Drive.
The changes will improve right-in/ right-out access for northbound motorists and access to the Gateway Center, according to city officials.
Mark Pierce Poole developed the retail and mixed-used 10,128-square-foot Kannapolis Gateway Center, which is located near the intersection of N.C. 73 and the Kannapolis Parkway.
The public hearing is scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday at the regular Kannapolis City Council meeting, which will be at the Kannapolis Train Station, 201 S. Main St.
The proposed grant can be viewed at the Kannapolis City Offices, 246 Oak Ave.
