Cannon's JV Football Team defeated Lake Norman Charter School Thursday night by a score of 26-7.
The Cougars got on the board early when, on just the third play of the game, quarterback Justin Redfern found Jason Eddie wide open and hit him for a 45-yard touchdown strike. Will Nork carried the ball in for the 2-point conversion and the Cougars led 8-0.
After the Cougar defense put the brakes on a LNCS drive, the Cougar offense took over at their own 9 yard line and three plays later, Justin Redfern carried the ball around the right end for a 77-yard scamper into the endzone. The extra point attempt failed and the Cougars led 14-0.
Lake Norman made a charge late in the half and got into the endzone to bring the score to 14-7 at halftime.
The Cougar defense came out in the second half fired up and forced the Knights to go three and out giving the ball back to the Cougar offense. The Cougars drove down the field and Will Nork finished the drive with a 4-yard run giving the Cougars a 20-7 lead late in the third quarter.
The Cougar offense hit paydirt again halfway through the fourth quarter when Justin Redfern found Mason McClanahan in the endzone for a 4-yard touchdown pass stretching the Cougar's lead to 26-7.
The Knights never threatened in the second half due to defensive play from linemen Jamie Jackson, Daniel Lee, Kevin Ross, Daniel Rhodes, Wil Safrit and Jake Marchant. The linebacking corps of Will Keenan, Mason McClanahan, Will Nork and Jason Eddie, backed up by the defensive backfield trio of Clay Durboraw, J.M. Wilson and Paul Anderson, were very strong and turned in a solid performance.
Offensively, the Cougars rushed for 243 yards and passed for an additional 148 yards bring their offensive total for the day to 391 yards. Justin Redfern led the ground attack with 127 yards on 7 carries while Will Nork, Mason McClanahan and Ryan Worgan chipped in 68 yards, 37 yards and 17 yards, respectively. The receiving corps was led by Jason Eddie with three catches for 77 yards. Mason McClanahan had two catches for 31 yards and Julian Nunez had one catch for 23 yards.
The JV squad travels north next Thursday to take on High Point Christian.
