Public transportation coming to rural areas

Cabarrus County will launch a new rural bus service on Oct. 5 that will link folks in Harrisburg, Midland, Mount Pleasant and rural parts of the county to major employers, shopping centers and medical offices.

Cabarrus Links, a part of the Cabarrus County Transportation Service, will provide public transportation to residents at various pick-up locations with routes to Concord Mills, Carolina Mall, CMC-NorthEast and the CK Rider bus hub, where riders can transfer their tickets to take a bus to locations throughout Concord and Kannapolis.

The county will host a kickoff celebration for Cabarrus Links at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at Concord Mills. The public is invited to attend the event to learn more about public transportation options and to check out the new Cabarrus Links vans.

Cabarrus Links is the result of a two-year process that involved lots of planning and applying for a grant to fund the new routes. Cabarrus Links is funded by a $200,000 federal matching grant provided by the Job Access Reverse Commute Transportation Program.

Cabarrus County transportation officials have worked with various human service agencies, major employers and local schools to develop the best way to serve rural residents and link them to local shopping and other destinations, including the larger cities in Cabarrus County.

The Cabarrus Links vans will operate Mondays through Fridays from 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. except for designated holidays. Arrive at the pick-up location at least 5 minutes prior to the departure time. The fair is $1 in cash for each one-way trip.

Cabarrus Links will be available to any Cabarrus County resident. The buses are wheelchair accessible. Children 8 years old or younger who weigh 80 pounds or less must use a child safety seat. Passengers must bring their own safety seats.
