CONCORD — It's a big week in a competitive season in South Piedmont Conference volleyball, and it started Tuesday night with Jay M. Robinson playing at Concord.

In a matchup of teams tied for third place, Robinson played like Bulldogs, dropping the first game, then winning the next three.

The final count was 17-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-22.

Robinson did it minus their head coach, Amber Handy, who was absent because of illness.

"Coach Handy has a fever of 103," said assistant coach Stacy Maloney, who took over head- coaching duties for Robinson.

Maloney found out she would be the head coach for Tuesday's game at about 10 p.m. Monday.

"They're a good bunch of girls," she said. "They know what they're doing. I'm a manager pretty much once they're in game-time. Just came out there, tried to keep intensity up, let them go to work."

In decisive game four, Concord led 12-9, but Robinson rallied behind Alex Kirk's kill and Madison Cline's kill and block to tie the score.

From that 12-12 deadlock, the game went back-and-forth, and was tied again at 22-all.

Getting a big kill from Cline for the 24th point, the Bulldogs scored the final three to improve to 7-2 in the SPC and 10-4 overall.

"They came together and played like a team," Maloney said. "That first game, we kind of hesitated a little bit, and then we came back second time, third time, fourth time, and that's what matters."

Maloney's advice after the Bulldogs dropped game one: "Pick it up, talk and go for the corners, they're open everytime," she said.

In the win, Mallory Harris had 15 assists, Meagan Marock 14 assists, Cline 13 kills and 3 aces, Ashley Strickland 11 digs and 3 aces and Tabby Koerner 4 blocks.

For Concord (11-3, 6-3), Heather Wilson had 18 kills and 12 assists and Katie Beecher 12 kills.

"Just got to recover, come back fighting hard on Thursday," said Spiders coach Leanne Havely. "And get ready for Hickory Ridge and Mount Pleasant and see what happens."

Hickory Ridge and Mount Pleasant both won Tuesday night, keeping them tied for first place going into their big matchup on Thursday at Mount Pleasant.

Robinson — the only SPC team to beat Hickory Ridge this season — is one game behind the co-leaders, with Concord in fourth place, two games out of first.

On Saturday, Concord beat North Gaston 28-26, 25-21, 25-17 in a nonconference game.

In the win, Wilson had 11 kills, Beecher 2 kills and 5 blocks and Tara Trahey 7 kills and 1 block.
