CONCORD, N.C. - About 20 "Dalmatians" sat at tables on Friday, eating cupcakes, marshmallows, popcorn and other snack foods at Covenant Classical School.

While a few of them sported collars with names, and many wore floppy ears, what they all had in common was that they are kindergartners at Covenant and were celebrating the 101st day of the school year.

For about 10 years, the school's kindergartners have celebrated the day by counting to 101, dressing up like Dalmatians and participating in dog-themed activities.

"It's a fun day," said Kim Hartsock, a kindergarten teacher at Covenant. "(The students) really look forward to it. Everyone enjoys it. It's school-wide fun."

This year, the two kindergarten classes, taught by Hartsock and Kim Cregger, were not the only ones who looked like Dalmatians. The school's seniors also dressed up and joined the younger students for a group photo.

Later in the day, the kindergartners made crafts with Dalmatians on them and played games.

Cregger's class tucked balloons under their chins and crawled on the floor as one of their relay activities, while Hartsock's class played musical chairs to dog-themed songs, among other games.

Jessica Dowd, 5, said before the relays that she could not wait to play the games. Lacie Hunt, 5, agreed.

Several parents came to watch the games and laughed as they took photos of the children acting like dogs.

But the day was not just about dressing up and playing games.

"It's a fun day to celebrate that many days and a great day to emphasize math skills," Hartsock said.

Both classes counted down to the day for most of the school year. On the 101st day, students from both classes brought in 101 pieces of an item, like pictures, jelly beans and beads, and they counted snack foods by 10s.

Hunt brought 101 paintbrushes, while Elizabeth Spaugh, 6, collected that many pieces of string.

Paul Douglass, 5, brought 101 black-eyed peas.

"My mom thought of that," Douglass said.

Students also enjoyed naming themselves something else, as they dressed up as dogs.

Dowd named her Dalmatian self "Sarah," and Douglass called himself "Spots."

Hunt went by "Crystal," and like her peers, enjoyed the day with her new identity.

"I like being a Dalmatian," Hunt said.

After all, Douglass and others agreed that counting to 101 was easier when they had fun.
