KANNAPOLIS - Monsanto is coming to Kannapolis.

The big agriculture company has signed a long-term lease to establish a research lab focused on the taste and nutritional composition of fruits and vegetables.

The company will have about a dozen scientists working at the Core Research Laboratory at the N.C. Research Campus by June. At an announcement at the Core Lab today, Robb Fraley, chief technology officer for Monsanto, said the partnership with the research campus would be an "opportunity to bring a broad partnership" in research with the universities.

Monsanto manufactures the weed killer RoundUp and genetically-modified seeds. Its lab will have about 9,000 square feet on the third floor of the Core Lab.

Fraley said Monsanto it was attracted to the campus because of the advanced genetics equipment in the Core Lab and the partnerships with the eight North Carolina universities.

Castle & Cooke, the research campus developer, has been working for about two years to develop a partnership with Monsanto, along with other companies.

Dole Foods chairman David Murdock said by bringing Monsanto to the campus, it has sent a signal to other companies looking to move at the campus.

This is the first company to announce its presence at the research campus since 2008.
