Correction: Not all endorsements listed are from the 8th district. Tariq, Kristie and Corey represent the 9th district. Craig represents the 12th district.
GOP congressional candidate Harold Johnson garnered endorsements from Tea Party activists.
The six are: Craig Nannini, Mecklenburg County Tea Party Leader; Rev. Russ Fincham, Tea Party Patriot activist from Rockingham; Corey Thompson, Co-Founder of CAUTION ("Common Americans United To Inspire OUR Nation"), Tea Party activist, and candidate for Mecklenburg County Commission At Large; Tariq Bokhari, Charlotte Political Activist and Tea Party Organizer; Kristie Chapman, Tea Party speaker and conservative blogger; and Lori Stadler, Former Communications Chairwoman for We the People of Cabarrus County.
"Right now our nation needs more leaders who are willing to put their conservative principles ahead of political rhetoric," said Corey Thompson. "Harold Johnson is just the man for that job, and I am proud to endorse his effort to represent the citizens of District 8, and to serve this great nation we love so much."
These endorsements counter Johnson's opponent, Tim D'Annunzio, who has the support of We The People of Stanly and Cabarrus counties. D'Annunzio said recently that Johnson was only garnering support of mainstream Republicans.
State Republicans have openly denounced D'Annunzio for his rhetoric and released court papers from his 1995 divorce. The court documents contained a psychological report that said D'Annunzio called the government the "Antichrist," and claimed he found the Ark of the Covenant.
State GOP chairman Tom Fetzer said D'Annunzio was unfit to hold public office, to which D'Annunzio responded by calling for Fetzer to resign.
"The reason we are talking about this is my opponent has no substance," D'Annunzio said Monday, adding that state and national Republicans are doing whatever they could to derail him and keep themselves in power.
Along with these endorsements, Johnson has backing from former congressman Robin Hayes, former governors Jim Martin and Jim Holshouser and a host of local Republicans leaders from the 8th District.
