The Charlotte-Mecklenburg school board has approved a plan to close 10 schools and make other major changes, drawing some accusations of racism.
Multiple media outlets reported Wednesday that the most contentious debate centered on the closing of E.E. Waddell High School. Speakers at the meeting criticized the changes for disproportionately impacting minority and low-income students. The local chapter of the NAACP protested outside the event.
School board leaders say the cuts are painful but necessary and the goal is to place affected students in schools that performed better.
The NAACP has also aggressively questioned school board officials recently in Raleigh in Wake County and in Goldsboro in Wayne County.
