More than $791,000 worth of improvements to Kannapolis roads were approved as part of the 2011 City of Kannapolis Resurfacing Project contract that the Kannapolis City Council awarded Monday to Blythe Construction Inc., according to city officials.
The contract involves the completion of the North Carolina Research Campus Phase I streets and North Main Street coupled with the resurfacing of Bethpage Road, according to Kannapolis public works officials.
On Dec. 13, 2010, Kannapolis City Council approved the N.C. Research Campus Capital Project Ordinance in the amount of $35 million. Included in the project was the completion of the Phase I streets and North Main Street. Kannapolis bid the projects together with the Bethpage road resurfacing to obtain more competitive pricing for the paving.
The project will involve paving and or resurfacing North Main Street, Laureate Way, Watson-Crick Drive, West 1st Street, Biotechnology Lane and Research Campus Drive in addition to resurfacing Bethpage Road.
Kannapolis received bids from three contractors. Blythe bid $791,297.10 for the project. Rea Contracting Co. bid $818,887.08. Blythe Brothers Asphalt Co. bid $936,080.20.
The contract will involve a substantial completion time of 45 days and final completion within 60 days of the contract, according to city documents.
The resurfacing of Bethpage Road will be funded with Powell Bill funds. The downtown streets will be funded with the N.C. Research Campus Build America Bonds. The total amount allocated for the completion of the downtown streets was $490,000.
