The Rotary Club of Cabarrus County is asking the community for help with another Adopt-a-Soldier effort.
Adopt-a-Soldier supplies soldiers with gifts from home. This time the packages will be sent to 203rd Red Horse Squadron stationed in Afghanistan.
Major Jeff Getz is the contact from the unit and is a friend of Steve Grubb the Rotary Club’s coordinator. Getz’s family is extremely supportive, but the club thought others in his unit might not be as lucky and would appreciate receiving comforts of home.
Suggested donations for the packages include individually wrapped drink mixes like lemonade, Gatorade and other powder water supplements; snacks that are individually wrapped like crackers, fruit snacks and granola bars; personal hygine items; socks, playing cards and CDs. The Rotary Club is also accepting financial donations to help offset the cost of shipping. Each package costs about $12.50 to ship.
Donations are being collected during the month of June. All donations must be received by Sunday, June 26.
The goal for the Rotary is to have the items shipped for arrival on or as close to the Fourth of July as possible.
“It is just a small gesture that my family can make to let one of our serviceman or women know that we appreciate what they do for us,” said Philip McAuley, a member of Rotary Club of Cabarrus County.
“We continue to send active duty military and reservists to Afghanistan-with no end in sight. It’s so easy for us to go about our daily lives and not think too much about these folks,” Grubb said. “I think that sending these packages can remind these soldiers that we are thinking about them and we appreciate the sacrifices they are making.”
